Artist’s Statement

I’ve always been mesmerized watching hawks perched along the highway and soaring through the air, and I also get excited by the detail revealed by photography of things that we are not normally able to see. Bringing these two interests together, I work to capture and frame my subjects in such a way as to captivate viewers of my photographs.

Using a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera with a telephoto lens, I am sometimes lucky enough to be able to photograph details of a bird’s eyes and feathers, or freeze a moment, not easily seen with the naked eye. I feel a great sense of joy, accomplishment, and pride when everything comes together and I’ve produced a technically good photograph that’s pleasingly framed.

For 2014, I made a commitment to take a photo every day; a commitment that has proven to be more difficult than I imagined. However, this project has caused me to look at subjects other than wildlife, and to look at these things differently than I previously had.

I enjoy photographing nature as well as things commonly found around us, but showing them in a somewhat uncommon way. My hope is that people looking at my photos will see something that causes them to stare for a moment or two and leaves them with a desire to see more.

Artist’s Bio

Mark Landman is relatively new to the art of nature photography, and has been practicing for a few years. He enjoys perfecting his technique and creating images that reveal something not normally observed. Although he is most interested in birds and wildlife, a recent commitment to taking a photo every day, has resulted in a much wider range of subjects.

Landman took some art classes in high school, and studied mechanical engineering in college. He lives south of Boston and is inspired by local photographers. He enjoys photographing in Massachusetts, Downeast Maine, Florida, and anyplace else he manages to visit.
